Empire of the Sea by Rylee Nitecki

In “Empire of the Sea”, the author included how Phoenicians used new tools and methods that solved problems people were facing. The Phoenicians came up with lots of solutions for these problems. The author writes, “What simpler, communal system of writing could you use to help everyone understand your records?” They had a problem of not having a simple way of writing. “The Phoenicians found a solution: an alphabet.” They, being smart Phoenicians, found a solution. The author included this because it is a main factor in the Phoenician time and now. This helps the reader understand that without them developing an alphabet, we might not have the alphabet we have today. The reader learns that the past impacted the future. What if they didn’t invent that alphabet? We probably wouldn’t have our alphabet today because the Phoenician alphabet is the basis of the English and Latin alphabets. Everything they did helped us and how we live today. The author told us how Phoenicians developed an alphabet to help them solve their problem of needing an easier form of writing. Not only did it help them, but it also helped us.
