Imperialism Impacts the Present: A Study of its Societal Effects by Liam Ryan (12th grade)
The present literature is one facet of a vast idea and is open to expansion. The study
embodies a historical approach as I discuss the three dominant sources of division in
post-colonial societies: religion, race, and political views. I delve into the history of 3 former
colonies to provide the reader with real life context and make connections with the region’s
current socio-economic climate. Next, I provide an explanation of the methodology used to
gather respondent data; an online survey and ideally interviews, if the COVID-19 situation
allowed it. Then, I present the survey results: the ancestral countries of respondents, a breakdown
of discrimination, percentages of historical inequality, and percentages of world opinions.
Finally, I discuss my conclusions of imperial history increasing the likelihood of modern societal
division, and why there has been a decrease in imperial ideologies.
